Kamchatka: Your Amazing Adventure

The photo exhibition ‘Kamchatka: Your Amazing Adventure’ was officially opened as part of the Days of Kamchatka event held by HSE University in the building on Pokrovsky Boulevard from January 19 to February 10. Visitors will learn about life in the region through photos of the unique landscapes and wildlife sanctuaries of the peninsula, the traditional Beringia dog-sled race, and the main symbols of the Kamchatka Region—brown bears, Pacific salmon, and wild reindeer.

The event was attended by HSE Rector Nikita Anisimov, Governor of Kamchatka Vladimir Solodov, Deputy Prime Minister of Kamchatka Alexandra Lebedeva, and students and staff of HSE University. The red ribbon was cut by Nikita Anisimov and Vladimir Solodov.

‘This is the first time we have held Days of Kamchatka at a leading Russian university,’ said Vladimir Solodov, addressing the guests of the exhibition. ‘You can’t understand Kamchatka unless you visit our region, feel the warmth of a volcano under your feet, and breathe the ocean air. The exhibition has been organised to get the attention of those who have never been to the peninsula, while those who have already been there will recall those unforgettable moments,’ he added.

Kamchatka is not just a unique region on the world map, said Vladimir Solodov. ‘Kamchatka is an important place where great geographical discoveries have been made. Kamchatka is a place where important events happened in Russia's military history in the Far East, and it is where people understand that they should be responsible for our environment,’ concluded the Governor.

A lot of cultural and business events and meetings will take place during the Days of Kamchatka event. The main purpose of the programme is to tell students and university staff about the peninsula and its main natural sights, as well as to provide opportunities for young people to realise their ambitions in the Kamchatka Region.

‘This is just the beginning of a huge event—one which I hope will change the life of our university in some way, because we are not just opening an exhibition and a programme of various events,’ said Nikita Anisimov. ‘We want to highlight the importance of our university's relationship with one of the most important regions of the Russian Federation. I expect many HSE students to find their calling in helping the Kamchatka Region to develop.’

The HSE rector also said that there are plans to hold a ‘Days of HSE University’ event in the Kamchatka Region in the future. Participants will learn how to get a high-quality higher education and fulfil themselves without leaving the region.

After the opening of the exhibition, the Governor of Kamchatka and HSE students took part in a discussion club about promoting tourism and creative industries on the peninsula. Yulia Gerasimenko, student of the Faculty of Social Sciences, asked about plans to attract tourists to the peninsula. The Governor said that there would not be any problems in that regard. ‘Affordable flights generate demand automatically,’ he said. ‘The only problem we are facing is how to accommodate everyone who wants to come.’ Vladimir Solodov added that the main issues in the tourism agenda are tourist accommodation in cities and transport links within the peninsula—roads and helicopters. He also stressed that Kamchatka's main mission is to change people’s attitude to nature.

Alyona Velikanova, student of the Faculty of Creative Industries, asked the Governor about the region's plans for long-term cooperation with HSE students. Vladimir Solodov said that Kamchatka is open to proposals. According to him, ‘All areas are in planning and will be developed, and students’ initiatives are very welcome.’

The event concluded with a presentation of HSE students’ expeditions to Kamchatka as part of the Rediscovering Russia project. Students told Vladimir Solodov about their research and shared impressions of their visit to the peninsula in 2022.
