The points he suggested have prompted a series of discussions in the university corporate environment aimed at choosing the best avenues and tools for development.

How Equality Started in Research
Legally, the 1917 revolution solved the gender issue in the Russian academic community. The doors to the profession opened for women, but a ‘glass ceiling’ remained. Ekaterina Streltsova and Evgenia Dolgova studied who it affected and why. This study is the first to present a socio-demographic analysis of the female academic community in Moscow and Leningrad during the early Soviet era.
Different Perspectives and Different People in HSE’s ‘Semester in Moscow’ Programme
Adrian Murillo Ramirez-Moreno is from Mexico City and is currently a third-year student at Universidad Anáhuac México where he studies International Relations. Nicholas Viggiano, from New Jersey, USA, is a third-year student at the University of Maryland, where he is pursuing a double degree in Russian and Environmental Science. Both are studying in HSE’s ‘Semester in Moscow’ Programme. The programme not only allows students to study Russian language at any level, but to design their own curriculum—students have their pick of any English-taught courses they choose, regardless of field. Students are accommodated in the HSE dormitories and receive an official transcript upon completion of the semester.

HSE Launches India Corner at the School of Asian Studies
On March 19, 2019, HSE hosted a launch ceremony for its new India Corner, which is housed in the School of Asian Studies and will serve as an open space for dialogue and collaboration with regard to Russia-India relations. The Corner will host cultural and scientific events related to the modern development of India, as well as open business seminars between Russia and India.

HSE Researchers Teach Neural Networks to Determine Crowd Emotions
Scholars from HSE University have developed an algorithm that detects emotions in a group of people on a low-quality video. The solution provides a final decision in just one hundredth of a second, which is faster than any other existing algorithms with similar accuracy. The results have been described in the paper ‘Emotion Recognition of a Group of People in Video Analytics Using Deep Off-the-Shelf Image Embeddings.’

HSE Gears up for Staff and Student Conference: A Look Back at the Faculty of Social Sciences
On March 20, a conference for HSE staff and students will take place at HSE. It will consider the university’s development programme and elect the new Academic Council. The previous conference took place five years ago, in 2014, and the university has changed a lot since then. HSE News Service spoke with some of the university leaders about how their own work at the University has changed over this period.
